Puppy Training in Zurich: Why You Should Start Before 6 Months

The first months shape the rest of your dog's life

Puppies learn incredibly fast - and the most important phase for socialisation happens early. Between roughly 3 and 16 weeks of age, your puppy builds the foundation for how they will perceive the world: people, other dogs, city noise, traffic and everyday situations. Positive experiences in this window last a lifetime.

Why waiting until the mandatory course is not enough

In Canton Zurich, the mandatory practical course starts at around six months of age. That is great for basic obedience - but by then, the most important socialisation window is already closing. Puppies who only start training at six months often have to catch up on things that would have been easy to learn at three or four months.

What early puppy training achieves

  • Confidence: Your puppy learns that the city is a safe place - trams, crowds, cyclists and noise become normal.

  • Social skills: Guided play with other puppies teaches bite inhibition, communication and frustration tolerance.

  • Everyday basics: First commands, leash walking, recall and being alone are much easier to teach now than later.

  • Prevention: Many behaviour problems in adult dogs start with missed socialisation - early training is the best prevention.
